In early December, local artists will travel by RV from Savannah, Ga. to Miami for the cutting edge conglomeration of art fairs that center around the annual Art Basel. Representing Savannah art collective, ArtPort 912, graphic and graffiti artists Rachel Raab, Jose Ray, and Adolfo Hernandez will present a live art performance at two prestigious international expositions, including Verge Miami on Thursday, December 6 from 6-10pm, the Fountain Art Fair on Friday, December 7 and Saturday, December 8 from 12-7pm. Performances will capture conveyance of street art onto a non-traditional surface: their mode of transportation.

“Basel is a world class event, so we wanted to do something unique. Each of us has great appreciation for live art installations so it was a no-brainer to go that route,” says Rachel Raab, co-founder of ArtPort and owner of Savannah print shop, The Soda Shop, print sponsor for both Fountain and Verge art fairs, providing totes, t-shirts, buttons, banners, trucker hats, and signature, retro, water-filled Soda Shop bottles. Also traveling alongside the crew is Tom Kazenske of Savannah Print Factory, a partner of Soda Shop, who will offer live letterpress printing of coasters on-site at the Fountain fair and of bookmarks at the Verge fair.

This will mark a repeat trip to Basel-Miami for Raab and Ray, who traveled with ArtPort912 in 2010 to exhibit a pop-up installation displayed in the Wynwood District inside a U-haul van. The team also completed a graffiti mural.

“I’ve been to Miami twice before during Basel, but this is my first opportunity to be involved,” she says. “Since I represent a local, independent business, I’m excited that our contribution to these art fairs is such a great experience.”

This year’s game plan involves adhering Oracal vinyl to the side of Raab’s 2011 Concord RV and then performing live painting and graffiti of the 30-foot canvas on wheels. “We are proud to use Oracal materials,” says Raab. “They’re one of the largest producers of vinyl with over 200 years of manufacturing experience so we trust we’re using a material that will maximize our end product.” On hand to assist are filmmaker Rodrigo Zozaya, and Vii Kelly, an Atlanta-based artist.

Fountain Art Fair is leading a new generation of alternative fairs, reinventing the experience through its renowned dedication to an influential group of over 65 international galleries and artist projects. Verge Art Fair is an international exposition of new contemporary and emerging art held annually concurrent with Art Basel Miami Beach. Launched in 2009, the fair defies convention as a unique exposition of artists and the galleries who represent them. Both Fountain and Verge will reoccur in March in conjunction with The Armory show in New York City, events where Soda Shop will again participate.

The Soda Shop is a full service print and design shop based out of Savannah, Ga. Artport912 is a collective of Savannah, Ga. based artists with a D.I.Y. mentality to promote the creative community of Savannah locally and to the world.
