5 questions with Taste co-creator Raabstract
By Patrick Rodgers

DO: What inspired you to put together an event like Taste?

Raabstract: Taste was inspired over a drink one Monday night. After meeting Joshua Branstetter for the first time, we talked about doing a collaborative show, and over the next few months it grew to becoming a huge cultural indulgence.

DO: Is the focus mostly on local artists or are folks coming in from out of town as well?

Raabstract: The majority of the artists are local, but because Taste’s purpose was to bring the art community together we also pooled regional artists from Charleston, S.C.; Orlando, Fla., and Jacksonville, Fla.

DO: What sort of work will be exhibited or performed?

Raabstract: Everything from photography, painting, printmaking and sculpture to a live graffiti wall, and more. Also we have break dancing, belly dancing, fire dancing, live projections and half a dozen DJs and musicians such as Number One Contender and Dope Sandwich Productions.

DO: Is there a pretty wide range of styles being represented, or is there a common thread to it all?

Raabstract: The gamut of styles is huge. I think the one commonality is that all the work has been created by those who are passionate about art, ready to step out of the box and show their work in a non-gallery type setting. There will be over a dozen sculptures, a fashion exhibit, live suspensions and a photo booth, to name a few. Taste is definitely an urban and unconventional art event that we think Savannah is capable of having, but it just needed to be brought together.

DO: Did choosing the name Taste have anything do with it being hosted at the M.E.A.T. space?

Raabstract: We actually chose the name of Taste before we settled on a venue, although it seems like some things are just meant to be.
